In a market where advertising is key for success, the algorithms of the apps are changing constantly, making this process very hard.

One of the base strategies of every business is SEO keyword research. Every brand wants to convert traffic on its website and attract more potential customers, and an effective way to do that is through keywords.

What are SEO Keywords?

Keywords or SEO keywords are the most used and searched terms, and they help brands appear in search engines like Google. These terms offer insights about potential customers and what you are looking for in keyword search engines.

Every start-up should consider using an SEO strategy to grow its business and attract more customers and visibility. Search Engine Optimization, short SEO, is the process of including keywords in your content to increase visibility on search engines. For example, when a brand wants to appear on the first page of a keyword search on Google, it should use these SEO keywords in its content. The more SEO keywords and terms used, the better. As a result, the brand will attract valuable traffic to its website.

You may ask yourself: How do I find the most popular keywords for my content strategy? Simply, you need to search these terms that belong to your business activity.

What is SEO Keyword Research?

SEO keyword research represents the process of searching for the most popular terms that people explore on search engines like Google. This way, every business can find and analyze what audiences are searching in order to create relevant content.

The SEO keywords from your content define what your business is doing and what you are trying to sell. It’s important to know that your keywords must be in a high number and valuable.

If you include many high-qualitySEO keywords in your content, like articles, blog posts, and even some product descriptions, this method can help to improve your visibility because you go up in Google rankings.

Types of SEO Keywords

You need to understand the difference between focus, long-tail, and regular SEO keywords.

Focus terms are the primary keywords that your strategy should be focusing on. It represents the main word that needs to be included in titles, URLs, meta descriptions, and general content on your website.

Long-tail keywords are terms formed by three or more words. These represent certain phrases that customers use before making the buying decision and searching for a more specific product that meets their needs.

These terms become more valuable in a market that is very competitive and this way brands can differentiate themselves. For example, if your first keyword search “phones” because you are not sure what kind of phone you want to buy. Then, after you find something you like, you search for “phone with 128 GB of storage”, that's a long-tail keyword because it’s more specific and gives you a more precise result.

How to do Keyword Research for SEO?

There are some important steps you need to follow for detailed SEO keyword research:

  1. Make a list of topics relevant to your brand.

This is the first step that you need to do in your SEO research. Create a spreadsheet with general categories of keywords for your brand to rank for. Usually, these are similar to products or services that you are selling or your audience might search for.

It’s important to keep this list as short as possible, with 5 to 10 topics. For example, a website that plans to sell natural products might have these topics on the list: natural Health, nontoxic products, healthy lifestyle, or natural remedies.

  1. Develop your topics with phrases that you think your potential customers might search for.

Based on your list of topics, your brand needs to identify the phrases that your target audience might search on  engines to find out about products, services, or any other information.

Consider using Google Analytics if you are already using it or HubSpot’s Sources report.

Look through your organic traffic to determine keywords that are searched by customers.

Taking the previous example, under “Healthy lifestyle” the list should also contain an aroma diffuser, essential oil therapy, hypoallergenic materials, and how to reduce allergies with natural remedies or air purifiers.

Create a list with all these terms and don’t be shy to ask employees or coworkers for more ideas if you need it.

  1. Search for more related terms.

There are some creative ways to find keywords if you need help in this process.

Firstly, when you are searching for a term in Google, scroll to the bottom of the page. You will find a list of related keyword search phrases marked in bold.

For more information, click on one of the related terms and go to the bottom of that page, you will find more keywords relevant for your search.

One more way is to type your keyword in Google Keyword Planner and you will find more terms to use.

  1. Analyze the strengths of your SEO Terms.

You can do this through a paid Keyword planner or SEO tool. The most popular platforms for this are Ahrefs, Semrush, Word Tracker, and Ubersuggest. The last two offer free versions if you don’t want to pay for these kinds of services.

To analyze your terms you should keep in mind that it matches the precise  keyword search that people use. Also, if no one uses a term, you should not use it for your strategy because it will not attract that much visibility.

  1. Identify search intent

Potential customers search on Google for something that they need. You always need to consider what these customer needs are by typing a keyword.

If that customer searches for some information and you try to sell him a product, you might get a click but they will quickly seek another website that meets their needs.

For this process, you need to analyze in detail every potential customer and their needs to create optimized content specific to their intent.
