Maybe one day you will think how good it is to have technology that helps us with everything. Have you thought about when your parents used paper maps and how hard it was to find the roads? How would it be if your parents had the perfect technology, like Google Maps, to tell them the correct road?

A good product design lets the users achieve basic tasks. But, it is a problem- users have hundreds of options to complete those tasks so that a good product can get you so far. A product design needs to go beyond functional to deliver usable and comfortable experiences.

So, now that I have made you curious, what is product design, and how can you transform a good one into a great one?

What is a Product Design?

You may be wondering what product design is. The product design process involves imagining, creating, and iterating products that aim to solve users’ difficulties or address special needs in a given market. To make a robust product design, you need to understand the end-user consumer, the person the design is for. A product designer needs to solve the problems for real people with empathy and knowledge of their prospective customers’ practices, behaviors, frustrations, needs, and wishes.

A product designer needs to create an impeccable product design so the users can use the design product because it understands their needs and expects their usage. A product design is crucial in creating the first user experience and product offering, from pre-ideation user research to idea growth to prototyping and convenience testing.

What Does a Product Designer Do?

A product design engineer's primary goal is to ensure the entire product design process goes quickly while considering user needs. A product designer can have many tasks, depending on the company's size. According to Uinkits, when the company wants to launch a new product, the first step a product designer will take is to imagine and increase it.

A product design engineer needs to research what traits can be added to the product. As a product designer, you need to focus on the product's usability. Also, it is essential to keep all the utilities in mind while you create a visually unique product design. You need to be in accord with trends.

A product designer needs to have specific skills to reach stunning product designs. So, what are those skills?

  • Technical Skills- As a product designer, you must have a few UI UX design skills. It is about prototyping, visual design, user research, and wireframing. You need to understand what your users want from you.

  • Visual Skills- The product designer exemplifies how tech and arts can be balanced. Even if you are competent in the technical part of UI UX design, you need to grow in product design with strong visual skills.

  • Project Management Skills- in the product design field, there is so much planning and strategizing. As a product designer, you need to be focused on the customer and have big-picture design thinking.

Now that you have found out what product design is and what a product designer does, maybe you marvel at the product design jobs where a product designer can work. Let’s find out!

What are the Types of Product Design Jobs?

The product design process is complex, and a product design job might have several roles under different names. Let’s explore the jobs where you can activate as a product design engineer.

  • UX designer- UX designers and interaction designers mainly aim to refine a product based on how their search about user behavior suggests people will get the most enjoyment from using the product.

  • Graphic designer - this is the job where the product design process is creating graphics, icons, logos, and visual elements of the product experience. Their horizon is as wide as selecting a color scheme and as narrow as modifying individual pixels.

  • Animation designer - The animation designer designs elements that are ‘moving’. This part is the most complicated part of the design, and the animation designer brings art to life.

  • User research- In a product design company, the goal is to understand the customer’s needs. This understanding can be achieved by interviewing, presenting mockups and prototypes for feedback, and building personas.

  • Prototyper- A prototyper helps the team bring ideas to real ones and helps the company confirm the product’s features to users. In companies that focus on physical products, a prototype will hand-craft mockups. In a digital one, the prototype will create wireframes or other virtual mockups.

  • Product designer- In many situations, the company will hire a person who can handle all the roles above, and other companies will employ under the product designer job. Also, other professionals in the company handle things like UX design, information architecture, etc.

Why Does UX Design Matter in Product Design?

If you have a startup business and you don’t know how to create a product design that covers all the needs of a user, you need to familiarize yourself with UX design. What is UX design?

What is UX Design?

UX (user experience) is in every product and service available today. A UX designer aims to make the products and services accessible, effective, and pleasing to use. So, UX design focuses on how users scroll on the page. For UX designers, it’s about optimizing the user experience flow and eliminating any sources of problems during these interactions.

So now that you understand what a UX designer is and what you can do in your startup business...

Why is it essential in the startup product?

Centering on UX design means that your startup business will be able to understand the customer's needs. Don Norman explained the way UX should try to meet the user’s needs by structuring a better customer satisfaction and a better product:

"No product is an island. A product is more than the product. It is a cohesive, integrated set of experiences. Think through all of the stages of a product or service — from initial intentions through final reflections, from the first usage to help, service, and maintenance. Make them all work together seamlessly."

Now that Norman has explained why UX design is crucial to your startup product, you are ready to implement the steps to create a fantastic product for your startup business.

What are the steps to Create Powerful Products?

So, to create powerful products, you need to follow the next five steps:

  • The functionality- many products are ‘functional’, but it doesn’t mean that they are usable. The startup product must be created to meet user needs and accomplish their tasks. If the product doesn’t meet these characteristics, the users will abandon the products, and the company will waste time and money on training.

  • The Usability- as a product designer, you need to step back and identify the ways your product can be more intuitive for users. You need to have a solid design model that is designed for internal teams and stakeholders, not end users. Also, your product design must allow users to accomplish tasks.

  • The comfort- a functional product and usable can make enough money to survive on the market. To stand much, the product needs to be comfortable. To create this comfort, you need to seek where users slow down and think more, creating intuitive and enjoyable interactions.

  • Delightedness- attractive products go beyond what users accomplish; they make them fun and desirable. The appealing products appear when you have time and freedom to get to know your audience and brainstorm ways your product can improve their day.

  • Meaningfulness- a designer should make the user's life easier and happier, but not every designer reaches the meaning. Meaningful products are more than functional, usable, comfortable, and attractive. The product needs to change the user’s life and create long-lasting success for the team who designed it.

The product design is a far broader, more strategically central role than most people know. It’s not only the process of making a product look better; ‘the product design is the whole process’, as Eric Eriksson writes. So, a good UX can transform Good products into great ones.
